How to Spot a Fake Facebook Account (and What To Do About It)

Social media is helpful for keeping up with friends and family members, but it is also useful for scammers who want to take advantage of our friends and family members. The way this type of scam typically works is that the bad guy sets up a profile using a real person’s name and profile photo. They block that person, then start sending friend requests to everyone on the target’s friends list. The bad guy then tries to scam his new “friends” by sending spam or requests for money, or by data mining the account to pull off the “Grandma scam.” This article will explain why scammers set up fake accounts, how to spot a fake account, what you should do to protect your account and how to report a fake account.
